12 Home Remedies for Healthier Hair

Hair styles may come and go but our hair has to be healthy to withstand the daily stress we subject it to. Naturally, an essential part of making hair stronger is eating a balanced diet and giving it tender love and care to keep it in healthy condition. Additionally, you can also use certain home remedies to make hair stronger, shinier and free from issues like dandruff, premature graying, breakage and hair fall. Here they are:

Natural Remedies for Healthy Shiny Hair

Avocado for Strong, Shiny Hair

Avocado is a super food and it also makes an amazing hair conditioner. Instead of using commercial conditioners, use avocado to strengthen the hair and give it a shine. Mash a couple of ripe avocados, really fine and apply the pulp to hair and scalp. Wash off after 30 minutes. Use this remedy regularly to make hair healthier, softer and shinier.

Coconut oil, Egg and Honey Mask for Coarse and Dry Hair

Wondering how to get healthy hair naturally? Then look no further than your pantry! Here is a great remedy for dry and frizzy hair:

  • Beat one egg yolk with some honey.
  • Add a teaspoon of melted coconut oil to the mixture.
  • Apply the blend to dry and frizzy hair, focusing on the ends.
  • Leave the mask on for 30 minutes to one hour.
  • Wash off with warm water. If your hair is still oily, use a gentle herbal shampoo to rinse it out. However, it is best to use only water to remove the mask. This will keep your hair healthy and frizz-free.

Herbal Hair Rinses for Dandruff, Greying & Hair Loss

Many herbs work wonders for the hair and help solve problems like dandruff, premature greying, and hair fall. Here are the best herbs that make great hair rinses:

  • Rosemary - for dandruff and hair fall. It works on tinea or ringworm too, and also darkens hair.
  • Sage – for conditioning
  • Parsley – clears up dandruff
  • Chamomile – lightens hair and reduces hair fall and dandruff. Also promotes hair growth.
  • Nettle leaves – treats dandruff
  • Neem – for dandruff and hair fall. Also curbs tinea and ringworm infection.

Simply choose the herb of your choice. Add hot water to it and allow to steep overnight. Use the strained mixture as a final hair rinse after washing hair.

Collagen for Increased Hair Strength

Collagen supplements are one of the best natural home remedies for hair fall control. These days, you can easily find collagen pills or powders online and offline. You can also make your own bone broth soup to boost your collagen intake. Regular consumption of collagen will give you healthy hair, beautiful wrinkle-free skin and stronger nails.

Biotin for Healthy, Strong Hair

One of the proven natural hair growth tips is taking Biotin. Biotin is a B-vitamin (Vitamin B7 or vitamin H) responsible for healthy hair, youthful skin and strong nails. It is available in certain foods like eggs, meat, etc., but you can also take supplements in case you do not eat these foods.  You need at least 1000 mcg to 3000 mcg per day of biotin or as advised by your healthcare provider.

Castor Oil for Hair Growth

Castor oil is a great home remedy for hair growth and improving thickness of hair. Massage pure, cold pressed, hexane free castor oil onto the scalp, focusing on thinning areas. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to castor oil prior to massage. Leave it on the hair overnight. Castor oil is very thick and viscous, so you might have to warm it up a bit. The next day, wash your hair with warm water and a mild shampoo.

Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth

Peppermint oil is considered a better remedy than Minoxidil for hair growth, as per recent research. Buy pure peppermint oil and mix it with coconut or olive oil. Massage the blend all over the thinning areas 2-3 times a week. Leave it on overnight. Wash off the next day with mild shampoo.

Coconut Oil for Hair Growth & Hair Fall Prevention

Drinking virgin coconut oil every day is the easiest way to get healthy hair naturally. Start with one rounded teaspoon of coconut oil; you could add it to your coffee or drizzle it on your salads. Work up your way slowly to eating up to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil every day. Within a few weeks, you will notice shinier, healthier hair and youthful, glowing skin. Also massage coconut oil on your eye lashes and scalp to promote hair growth and prevent hair fall.

Brewer’s Yeast for Shinier, Healthier Hair

One of the common causes of dull, unhealthy hair is a deficiency of B complex. Brewer’s yeast contains a host of B vitamins which makes it one of the best natural ingredients for hair health. Sprinkle a few teaspoons of Brewer’s yeast on your oatmeal, popcorn or yogurt. Within weeks, you will notice shinier, healthier hair.

Onion Juice for Hair Fall Prevention

Onion juice is one of the most effective home remedies for hair fall. Grate a few onions and apply to the scalp. This remedy will stimulate hair growth and curb hair fall. You can also mix onion juice with aloe vera and olive oil. Massage the blend on the scalp, leave it on overnight and wash off with a mild shampoo the next day.

Topical Aspirin for Preventing Hair Fall

If dandruff is a major cause of your hair fall, you could use this natural remedy. Crush 10 aspirin tablets in a bit of water and massage the paste onto problem areas. Wash off after 30 minutes and repeat this treatment 2-3 times more or until dandruff disappears.  Aspirin may help reduce the scalp inflammation that causes dandruff, and it also helps to exfoliate the flakes on the skin (which also cause dandruff).

Borax for Thicker, Healthier Hair

If your hair is very oily, use Borax to wash it. Mix Borax with a bit of water and massage the paste into your wet scalp and hair. Rinse off as usual. Your hair will be less oily and it will get natural volume and bounce. You can also use a mixture of baking soda, Borax and water to wash hair instead of your shampoo. With a few weeks, your hair will be shinier, healthier and with reduced hair fall.
