12 Natural Remedies for Hemorrhoids

Nobody likes to talk about hemorrhoids; they are extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing, but anyone suffering from them knows exactly how painful they are. Hemorrhoids occur when the anal veins begin to stretch out or dilate, forming painful swollen lumps on the inside or outside of the anus. These lumps cause a great deal of pain and sometimes bleeding while passing stools. Each hardened bowel movement further strains the region and continues to irritate the anus, making it a vicious cycle that is hard to break.

Let us study some effective natural remedies for hemorrhoids that will surely give you much needed relief:

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar for Natural Hemorrhoid Healing

You can use apple cider vinegar in two ways. Apply it topically to the anal area and also drink it before meals to heal the hemorrhoids from within. Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to hot water in a Sitz bath and sit in it for 15-20 minutes. Do this after every bowel movement to kill the germs and speed up healing. Also drink organic, raw apple cider vinegar mixed with some juice or water daily. This helps balance the pH of the body and fight inflammation.

  1. Rutin to Speed Up Hemorrhoid Healing

Rutin, a citrus flavonoid found in a variety of plants, is a popular and effective natural remedy for eliminating hemorrhoids completely. The recommended dosage is 450 to 500 mg capsule of rutin twice a day (be sure to check with your healthcare provider).  This bioflavonoid speeds up healing and cures anal fissures.

  1. Aloe Vera Suppository Remedy for Hemorrhoid Pain Relief

Make aloe vera suppositories by add pure aloe gel to melted virgin coconut oil. Place the mixture in the refrigerator and let it harden. You can roll and cut the hardened mixture into tiny ‘logs’ by pressing it in plastic sheets. At bedtime, insert one log into the anus. This will cool, soothe, and heal the irritated anal tissues to give lasting pain relief. After bowel movements, soak in a hot water Sitz bath and then insert another of the ‘logs’. Do this for a week to cure hemorrhoid pain and stop them from coming back.

  1. Eat Black Peppercorns to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids Naturally

A simple remedy to heal bleeding hemorrhoids is black peppercorns. Simply swallow a few black peppercorns in the morning and evening, preferably on an empty stomach. Do this every day and even the severest of hemorrhoids will be cured within days.

  1. Cayenne Pepper Heals Hemorrhoids From the Inside Out

Take 500 mg of cayenne pepper pills once a day to heal serious hemorrhoids. Cayenne pepper is anti-inflammatory and heals all kinds of painful issues. You can also drink cayenne tea in the morning. Do this regularly to get rid of piles, fissures and hemorrhoids.

  1. Coconut Oil Helps Heal Hemorrhoids

Keep a jar of coconut oil in your bathroom for this purpose. Apply a liberal amount of the oil before bowel movements to facilitate an easy exit of the stool, and into the anus after cleaning, post bowel movement, to assist with healing. You can also make coconut oil suppositories by refrigerating the oil and rolling it in small logs. Insert one into the anus at bedtime. Wear a panty liner to prevent your clothes from getting oily.

  1. Essential Oils for Natural Healing & Hemorrhoid Relief

Essential oils are amazing natural remedies to get rid of anal irritation, itch, pain and swelling. Mix any of the following essential oils with coconut or olive oil: chamomile, lavender, tea tree, or peppermint. Add a few drops of the oil of your choice to coconut or olive oil. Apply the blend to the irritated anus. The oils soothe and cool inflamed tissues. Many of these oils are also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and can give instant relief from irritation and pain. Apply the blend of oils post bowel movement and again a couple of times during the day. When done daily, your hemorrhoids will get cured within a couple of weeks.

  1. Garlic Cloves Are a Natural Hemorrhoid Remedy

Garlic is a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti bacterial and antiseptic ingredient provided by Mother Nature. Many times, hemorrhoids are difficult to heal because of the presence of bacteria in the anus. So, after bowel movements, insert a garlic clove coated with coconut oil into the anus. Also insert a new one every night at bedtime. Garlic’s allicin, sulfur and other medicinal compounds heal the swollen and bleeding hemorrhoids. You can also apply garlic oil to the anus post bowel movement. Alternatively, you can take garlic supplements to prevent hemorrhoid pain and inflammation.

  1. Vicks Vaporub® for Hemorrhoid Relief

Preparation H cream often fails to give complete relief from pain, itching, swelling and inflammation. Instead, use Vicks Vaporub as the cooling menthol in it soothes and cools the skin. Apply it post bowel movement and again a couple of times a day. Within a week, the hemorrhoids will shrink.

  1. Horse Chestnut Pills Relieve Swollen & Bleeding Hemorrhoids

The recommended dosage is one horse chestnut pill thrice a day for 3 days to get immediate relief from swollen and bleeding hemorrhoids. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking any new supplements.

  1. Herbs for Hemorrhoids

Several herbs are known to have helped people prevent hemorrhoid surgery.

  • Two of the most notable herbs for hemorrhoids are Collinsonia Root and Fargelin. Take 1-2 pills of each three times a day and soon the bleeding, pain and swelling will diminish. Consult an experienced herbalist to know more.
  • Almost all herbal remedies for constipation and hemorrhoids contain ginger, owing to its anti-inflammatory property. Mix ginger, cayenne and turmeric and make a tea from these herbs. Sip this soothing herbal tea three to four times a day to get relief from hemorrhoid pain.
  • Comfrey and Chickweed salve can be used topically after bowel movements to soothe the pain away.
  • Arnica Montana – This herb soothes swelling, pain and inflammation and brings about rapid healing from all kinds of problems. Arnica is available in the form of an oil, pills and even gel. Apply 7% Arnica gel onto the irritated tissues and get instant relief from hemorrhoid pain. You can apply it several times a day.
  • Witch Hazel – Witch hazel is an astringent herb that contains natural salicytate compounds that heal, soothe and repair skin. You can use witch hazel in a number of ways for relief from hemorrhoids. Apply witch hazel toner or astringent on a toilet paper and wipe the irritated region after bowel movements. Secondly, you can soak a clean tampon (or sterile cotton ball) completely in witch hazel and insert it into the anus overnight. Also keep witch hazel spray in the bathroom. Spray it onto the anus after every bowel movement.
  1. Dietary and Lifestyle Changes to Prevent & Heal Hemorrhoids

The following lifestyle and dietary changes can help prevent hemorrhoids and heal existing ones:

  • Eat plenty of fiber to avoid constipation. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals with bran contain plenty of fiber. You can also take psyllium husk. Eat whole grains. Avoid processed foods with refined flour.
  • Drink a lot of water – at least 8-10 glasses/day. You can also drink herbal teas. Avoid caffeinated beverages which are dehydrating. Also limit alcohol intake.
  • Limit or avoid red meat. It is constipating.
  • Walk or run every day for at least 30 minutes. Exercise regulates bowel movements and, more importantly, it prevents obesity. Any amount of excess weight you carry will put pressure on your anus. So reduce your weight if you are overweight.
  • Use a bidet. The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to avoid straining during bowel movements. A bidet can help shoot water up your anus to get things moving.
  • Take enemas. Enemas, like the bidet above, loosen the clogged up ‘pipes’ and keep you regular.
  • Change your position. Squat over the toilet instead of sitting normally. This will press your tummy, move the bowels and avoid straining of the anus.
  • Avoid use of toilet paper which is rough and can irritate the already tender skin. Use baby wipes or a bidet for cleaning. You can also sit in a hot bath after bowel movements.
